Makes sense to me. Dry hopping is not an efficient way to get everything out of the hops. Only some of the things.

And you know the wisdom we give people when they ask about re-using a yeast cake... we always tell them "it's best to do it with beers without a lot of flavor / aroma hops unless you are making a similar or hoppier or stronger flavored brew". Basically we have known this affect existed for a long time, just not taking advantage of it.

i did it a few times
makes perfect sense.

stopped out of concern about contamination
also didn't like handling the slurry ...

I suppose you could get a really big freaking bag (would have to be really big so hops can expand and contact the wort properly) and use it to hold your dry hops, and then throw that bag into the boil of another beer. Or somehow make a "dry hop spider".
