Mr Beer Partial Mash Porter...

Post by MadBrewer »

I haven't used MB in a looooooong time, haven't brewed with extracts or even a partial mash in a long time either. But I have some MB mixes I was given and want to use them up and brewing is brewing as far as I'm concerned. I thought a nice Robust Porter would be good to get going. Kinda malty, maybe a little sweet, roast and toasty yet smooth and creamy. Mmmm....sounds good already. The grain portion of this recipe is pretty much based on Jamil's Vanilla Robust Porter recipe and I may or may not add some Vanilla once I get to it, and I'm also thinking some Cocoa. Maybe in the boil or dry spicing some Cocoa Nibs. The 3.5 lbs of LME is actually one can of MB Patriot Lager and one can of Classic American Light. Both mixes are a nice neutral base to build on and I'll add the HME's near flameout. I'll mash somewhere in the 153* range for some body and mouthfeel. I'll be using some rinsed US-05 and ferment around 66*. The Black Malt is a Debittered Black Malt, but it's not as mellow as Carafa, I wanted some Roast to it. I'm not much of a fan of regular Chocolate Malt, so I switched things up between Pale Chocolate and a new Dark Chocolate Malt the LHBS had. It tasted great, it had a nice roasty flavor but with the addition of Dark Bakers Chocolate. I also added a pinch of Roasted Barley and I though the mix of Dark Malts would be a nice layer of character.

Here's my question, how much bitterness do you think I will get from the MB mixes once everything comes together? I know I will get some, maybe 10 or less IBU's. I'm wanting to have 30-35 IBU's total but I no longer have QBrew to factor in the HME's. I think this is good enough, any thoughts?

The LME in the recipe is actual 2 cans of HME, I rounded them off to 3.5 lbs total from about 1.75 each. 1 can MB Patriot Lager and 1 can Classic American Light. I was confused on where to post the recipe, since it's a partial mash yet contains HME.

Two MrB cans is closer to 3.75 pounds in the interest of accuracy.

That may be true Wings Fan, but like I said I rounded off. I remember from brewing with LME, MB especially I never got every last drop of extract out of the can and OG would fall short of estimated. This leaves a little give or take, not a huge impact...it should still be in the area mid 1.060's beer. But you are correct, what are the new can's like 1.89 lbs?

1.87 lb. Man oh man it is hard to get the last HME outta da can. I use tongs and swirl around hot wort dipped out of the brew pot with a sanitized measuring cup. I started using tongs after the first time and the burned fingers!
