Royal oak vs Kingsford Blue

Post by teutonic terror »

Hello BORG! :borg:

Just a quick question for all the BBQ gurus on the board...
have any of you used Royal Oak briquettes and if so, how in your opinion,
do they compare to Kingsford?

Yes and they burn good, Kingsford is just a good name and whatever you can get the cheapest works either way. I only use briquettes as a base and like lump and wood for the BBQ/smoke flavor.

When I had a charcoal smoker, I pretty much only used Royal Oak. I loved them. They seemed to burn much longer than Kinsford.

Thanks Berryman...
I already knew some but not all of that history, and it was eye opening!

The reason I asked this question was Sam's had two Kingsford 19.5lb bags for 14.99
and Lowe's had Royal Oak for 5.99 for a 15.4 lb bag...
virtually a wash per lb price wise.

This morning I bought Kingsford for 9.88 for 37 lbs from Lowe's which is about .10 a lb cheaper....
I know...tightwad
I'm gonna get another 37 lbs this afternoon at that price and have the wife pick it up tomorrow!

Thanks BORG! :borg:

Not much difference at all
Around here Royal Oak is more expensive
So I usually use Kingsford
But most of the off brands are just as good
So I will use Kroger brand
Sams choice
Depends more on price than anything else

Glad you liked it. Wikipedia is usually close but not always 100% acurite but good reading. As far as which kind? they both work about the same in my opinion....I like mixing in lump coal also, burns a little hotter and faster, but a little more BBQ flavor I think.

I hit up Lowe's when they put charcoal on super sale. It's all stored in the bags in an uninsulated Tough Shed. I think that weathers it to all about the same quality.

I use lump, but keep it in a plastic garbage can in a shed. Keeps well.
