Re: Boatload at 5 IPA

This is cold crashing and I plan to try something new and dry hop in the keg/secondary. My plan is to run my pickup tube into my hop tube (picture to follow). I'll set up the secondary keg with the screened dip tube, drop 4oz of hops in the keg, rack in beer, purge keg of O2, wait 3 days, push beer to serving keg with CO2, carb, drink, enjoy!!

Kinda like this, but I don't want to drill a hole in my lid. I'm hoping most of the hop pellets won't float and go over the open hop tube. I have a hop sack I might employ to to help, we'll see.

I always welcome thoughts and discussion on this. Especially when trying new things.

I think that would work just fine, but also tip the keg away from the pickup tube and let it settle out away from the setup.

Put a hopsack over the top of the hop tube and cut a hole in the hopsack, then feed the diptube through the hole and proceed as pictured.

Or, you could fill lower than the top of the screen and not have to worry about them floating or not. I can't tell how close to the top it goes, so maybe that's not feasible? You could bottle (gasp) the rest.

Sometimes stupid jumps right at you. Racked this to the secondary keg today. Initial taste is......... Juicy....maybe better than my Pliny clone.
Here's the first picture of the set up...what's missing?

That's right, the mason jar ring that's supposed to be holding the bag in place and this is what happens.

Oh well. By the time I realized it it was too late. This was just a dry hop and closed system transfer and it still may be. We shall see.

Here's the thing.
It would have stayed in place had I remembered to screw the sanatized mason jar ring that was sitting in Star-San right next to the keg.

Thanks! I'm ok with stupid hurting just as long as it doesn't ruin the beer. :clink:

Boatload at 5 IPA

Post by Inkleg »

Just transferred to the serving keg and it went surprisingly well with little to no hop matter transferred. The weird thing was the actual transfer. There was no visual reference to what was happening, just the weight change noted when picking up kegs. There were hop particles all over the outside of the tube, but none on the inside and there were no compacted pellets like I've gotten when putting the hops in the tube, just hop sludge.
