Been a while, but I've got news!

Post by philm00x »

First of all, hello Borgies and Borgettes! It has been quite a while since my last appearance. My absence has not been without merit.

At this point in my life, my daughter Olivia is now almost 15 months old, and is walking and talking (sporadic words here and there, not sentences). I was working a lot, trying to provide for my family, and was finding it hard to brew as regularly as I used to.

Nonetheless, I've been making efforts to try to turn Mr. Rufus Brewing Company into a reality while I worked a retail schedule. That is to say, a schedule that was as far from regular as it could get.

While I still want to make my dream of owning/operating a professional brewery a reality, life had a funny way of guiding me in that direction. Last week, I started a new job that has a regular Monday through Friday schedule. And this is my office...

Ladies and gentlemen, I am now the assistant brewer at a local microbrewery! It's called Wop's Hops, in Sanford, FL and they have been around for almost 2 years. It's running a 3-bbl system and has a taproom and beer garden, and now just a couple weeks ago opened a kitchen to serve food.

Needless to say, I'm beyond excited to have landed this new job that will be my career and the experience gained here will be immeasurable. While, of course, I must put plans for MRBC on hold (whether temporarily or permanently), I'm just glad that I'm in a point in my life where I feel like I'm actually doing something worthwhile. Something that feels like I'm not actually working, but living a dream. Not to mention that I can finally spend weekends with my wife and daughter!

Yeah, congrats.

I'd be interested to hear about what you think working with the large volume brewing system.

Hooray for you!! I hope it turns out even better than you expect!

My uncle and aunt live in Sanford! I went there a few times when I was a kid and loved it. Maybe I’ll have to visit again. They’re teetotalers though, and out of respect to them I have never told them I brew beer, or even drink it.

I actually rather enjoy it. It's a gas system, with heavy duty burners, so it puts out a looooot of heat. Mashing in hundreds of pounds of grain takes a lot more muscle than just 10-15 lbs, so it gives me a heck of a workout. What I've told others is that it is basically just like a homebrewing session just with a lot bigger equipment and volumes. It does take longer from start to finish because it's so much bigger in scale, but it's not much different in work load.

Jeff,
Mr Rufus and Otto the Hotdog are still the best of friends and doing well. We take Otto to the in laws house every week so he can play with his brother from the same litter, while grandma and grandpa play with Olivia.

Thank you very kindly, and yes we're still living in the same place. We have been trying to look at getting a real house instead of this condo we're in now. We want to give the baby and the dog a nice big yard to play in, and I want a space like a garage or a shed out back to brew in, while having our own driveway instead of a parking lot. A place we can invite ppl over to hang out. Likely we're looking at a house much closer to my in laws which would be really nice and also it puts me closer to the new job, as I'm currently driving almost 50 miles daily to and from.
