New forum request

Post by bpgreen »

There have been a number of threads recently that revolved around cooking and/or fermenting food.

In some of those, there have been suggestions that we should have a new forum that is food related.

Since this is a beer brewing related forum, Leigh is understandably reluctant to add new forums that aren't brewing related, but he told me that if there's enough interest, he'd be willing to do that.

I thought I saw support for that, but that may have been perception bias on my part, since I've recently become interested in nutrition in general and also in fermenting foods (not just beer). I know that FD does a lot of barbecuing, and there was a recent thread on freezing, canning, fermenting. And there were a few others on fermenting food recently.

How much support is there for a food forum? I think we should keep it pretty wide open as a food forum, rather than narrowing it down to fermented foods, recipes, etc, but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks BP for bringing to everyone's attention. As I've said previously I'm more than happy to accommodate forum requests that will make the Borg better. So please let us know your thoughts, ideas or concerns about how best to do this. :barman:

I cook, make bread (which is fermentation) and ferment various other things besides beer, so I'd be into it.

That said - if you want to restrict it to fermented products only - which is not a huge deviation from "brewing" - then maybe simply an "Other Fermentation" forum would be appropriate.

Tossing some crumbs onto the table as it were...

Food, yes.

Subforum, fine...

No need to break it down to specifics unless/until it gets big/unmanageble.

Beer and food go well, both from an eating/drinking perspective as well as a brewing/cooking slant.

We have seen numerous pics and recipes, cheese making, cakes, barbeque sauces, etc already...

So... +1 here.

BBQ here, a "food court" would make things somewhat easier to find if you saw something in the past and can't recall what subject it was posted under and where.

Since the question was asked, I'll offer my perspective, which is different from the above. I participate in multiple forums - for my F-150, specific tech products I own, beer, etc. I come to each forum for that specific focus. I don't go to the F-150 forum and ask about food, and I don't expect F-150 information on my beer forums. If nothing else, the expertise is usually lacking, but even if it exists the focused forum has more of it and usually more accuracy.

So, my perspective would be to not have a food forum on Beerborg.com. However, if there is sufficient interest I have no objection to one being added.

Edit - and John's point is something to consider - cooking WITH beer would be highly-related to the Beerborg's main theme.

My 2 cents; I've seem many food related items on here and I must say they make my mouth water. Most cook with beer in some way and I see this being a way for members to show off their cooking skills along with what they use their beer for besides drinking. Most of us aren't pros at beer making but we try. IMHO

I think a "FOOD COURT" forum would fit nicely

I don't see why a food forum wouldn't fit here. someone posted above about specific forums for specific needs. I agree that you would not go to a f150 and talk about food, but beer and food go hand in hand. I liked on the old forum the food section seeing what other people are eating out there. Some days it gave me dinner ideas when I couldn.t think of something. So IMO I am for it.

Well Obviously Birdie is going to chime in.

I started posting things about food because I was a still a newbie some of the other Borgies would bring up food topics BUT a lot of those original posters don't seem to come on much anymore. :(

I've posted food related topics, recipes, game day menus etc. for a while and the reality is that the interest across the Borg doesn't seem strong enough to ask the moderators (operators/ Louie/the people who the forum to go to a bunch of effort or cost (if there is some).

I guess I thought there would be overwhelming interest in the subject as a thread, because our forum is like family and we would be exchanging PM's for recipes or trash talking sauce ingredients in the thread ( :D )

Like RB says and what Mr. MacGoo (all hail) built this is a beer brewing forum not a food forum so US foodies may be asking to much.
