Bell's Home Brew Compitition

Post by LouieMacGoo »

A few people from my HBC are going to make a trip to Bell's on Sept. 19th to pick up wort for this. I've not done it before but will be this year. Really looking forward to this and seeing how I do. Anyone else going to enter?

Good luck to all who enter. I respect Bell's very much; love their Oberon and Two-Hearted Ale!

I have nothing to enter, though. But I love how these micros are encouraging homebrewers in this way. It goes beyond business, and addresses Beer Culture directly. They got their heads screwed on straight, it seems to me.

How does that work Louie? You all go pick up the same "baseline" wort from them, and then add whatever hops/stuff you want? If so are you allowed to steep some grains and expand upon their wort, or are you just allowed to use hops/spices/whatever yeast you want?

Do they tell you what the baseline wort is from (what of their own beers it's comparable to?).

I've not done this before but from what I have heard pretty much anything goes. You can add pretty much anything to it and make whatever recipe you can dream up as long as it's repeatable. Some have even made sours from the given wort. As for the wort, they don't tell you what it is other then the OG which is usually in the 1.040 to 1.050 range.

If you think about this is really quite an interesting experiment for them to get so many different types of beer from the same base wort.
