Not to side track your little experiment but you mentioned Avangard Pale. My LHBS carries some Avangard Pils, Munich and Avangard Pale Ale malt. Are you refering to the Avangard Pale Ale malt or just a Pale Malt such as 2 row?

If it's the Avangard Pale Ale malt, I'm currious to your thoughts on it. My LHBS also carries Briess Pale Ale malt, actually he carries mostly Briess everything. Briess specialty malts seem fine but to me, Briess base malts are plain, almost bland compared to others. So if the Avangard Pale Ale malt is something decent, I would like to try it.

The Avangard tested was pale ale malt (3L).

My palate t'ain't too sophisticated but it doesn't seem as bland as Briess.
I like low SRM ... hop-forward ales ... so sometimes a touch o'aromatic and maybe a wee bit o'Victory are added to the mash for malty backboness (trademark!) without the sweetness.

LHBS started carrying Avangard products about a year ago.
Avangard pale ale malt sold for $1.10/# ... well-under the $1.40/# for Briess and $1.80/# for Castle.

The only purpose is to know if you should mash longer or not.
Maybe 'splains why the degree of modification hasn't been an issue in my brew closet since for convenience ... I routinely step-mash (beta rest; alpha rest) for 75'.

All I was looking for. I will probably give it a try in a straight up IPA.

We are selling the malt for just $1.10/lb in the hope that we can get some feedback from our customers. If you do purchase it we just ask that you at write a review regarding the malt that you purchase. This will help us decide is we should start carrying the malt full time.

I went ahead and got 10 lbs of Swaen and have not idea what I should do with it. Maybe a pale.
Also got some Golden Promise since my LHBS doesn't carry either.

Swaen is a 100+ years old Belgian maltser.

"Swaen pale ale malt is used to correct over-pale malts, to produce "golden" beer and to improve palate fullness.
I'm guessing that you'll end up making a Belgian that is golden colored and has a full palate. :whistle:
