Fast Pitch Wort

Post by Beer-lord »

http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/fast ... ort-4-pack
Fast Pitch™ is an instant yeast starter. Go straight from can to flask and eliminate waiting, extra equipment, clean-up and risk of contamination. No boiling, no DME. From start to finish in under 5 minutes, Fast Pitch™ is as easy as pour, pitch, propagate!
Maybe I'm old fashioned or just stuck in my brewing ways but I feel better with a boil.

Yea...you might be old fashioned, or just a guy that's experienced in making starters. But for a guy like me who has never done a starter and uses mostly dry yeast, or a Wyeast smack pack, because neither require a starter, this might be kind of cool. Maybe its the first step for a guy like me to stretch my wings into starters.

OK, I totally get that. But other than time saved, starters are easy. I'm sure if you clean and sanitize the flask and can, with the chlorine in most tap water, you're safe.
I say go for it and let us know how it goes.

My LHBS started offering to make starters. If you buy the yeast there they charge 4 dollars to do a starter for it. You call them on Wednesday and pick up thursday or Friday. I think it is a great idea for those who can't do starters due to lack of experience or equipment or space.

For me it's not worth $18, cost of can plus shipping, for a 1 L starter, still need the stir plate and flask. I like that idea your LHBS has Dan! My version of fast pitch is going to be what Mashani has done, mash some 2 row boil up a gallon and a half or so and freeze one liter PET's, thaw and pitch.

Sanitize everything—flask, stopper, top of each can of Fast Pitch™, and yeast packet.
And your finger that pulls the tab. Because you know there are boogers on it.

Ok I can't read! Even at basically the same price of DME to make a one liter starter I still like the hands on approach.

I needed some grains my LHBS doesn't have for a future brew so since shipping is only $8, I figured I'd get a 4 pack of this to try in the future. I'll either use bottled water or boil and chill my own as I don't want to use tap water.
While it doesn't take too very long to make a starter and the cost is likely more expensive, I'm going to see how much time I save. The 5L starters are the longest, of course since it takes longer to chill it but usually I'm done in 30-40 minutes but this looks like less than 5. I'd pay for that!

I've thought about it. But like some have said, cost is the biggest factor. I must say, I am lazy in the sense that if I can eliminate a step, I will (usually) pay the price to do so. It just depends on the price. Recently I brewed a Tripel that required 1.4L worth of 1.040 starter wort and I decided that the cost of the canned starter wort was not worth it. Been a week to the day since brewing the Tripel and it's chugging along nicely.

This would be good to have around the house for those semi last minute brew days when you don't plan ahead. I usually do my starters 5 days out. 2 days to grow and 3 to cold crash. With this, I can do it overnight and if needed, pitch the next afternoon without decanting.

Talk about fast! I did miss the usual love and care of a real starter and this one is much darker than mine usually is.
I boiled some water 2 days ago and chilled it overnight. Took it and the yeast out of the fridge for 45 minutes while I ate dinner. Sprayed the cans and yeast package with Star San, added 3 cans of Fast Pitch and 3 cans of water, added the stir bar and BAM! 3 minutes max (except for the water boiling previously).
I've read where many just use tap water but I can't do that. I can't say this is something I would do often but in a pinch, you are paying for time savings.
I'll see if this yeast attenuates as well as it normally does and decide if I'll use it again. Well, I do have 1 more can so I guess I will.

Thanks for the up date. Let us know how it urns out.
Though I'll admit, when I have to dilute my left over wort when making a starter, I'll use tap water. I feel if it's good enough to drink straight of the tap, it's good enough for my starter without boiling.

I do have flask envy though. I like the size of your unit. ;)

Morebeer puts them on sale from time to time. Even at $40 it's not a bad deal but I got it for $25 with free shipping. Great price for the size and it's not a thin flask either.
