Yes. Cara is Dingemans Cara 45 Malt, a medium-amber crystal malt that will impart a rich, caramel-sweet aroma and full flavor, as well as intense color. (L 45) http://www.cargillfoods.com/wcm/groups/ ... 673885.pdf

Crystal 45 seems hard to find.

Thanks Rick, I thought they were about the same with just a different name. You don't see the Crystal at very many places.

My LHBS lists M&F (British), Weyermann (German) and Breiss (US) as their Crystal malt suppliers. They don't carry the cara or caramal versions. I like Breiss because it's from my homestate WI.

The "5s" tend to be British crystal vs. American. Look for "Crisp" malts if you want to find more of them.

Cara45 is the Dingemans CaraMunich. One of my favorite grains and the reason I don't use Special B.

In general, caramel and crystal malts are "the same". However, different maltsters have different processes, and malts by the same name can have differences. And as Derek notes, Cara 45 is what some others would call CaraMunich, which has differences in the initial malting steps.

Crystal and caramel can be the same, but crystal malt is always produced by roasting and caramel can either be roasted or kilned. For most purposes, the differences are pretty minor.

For those who are interested in the difference between kilning and roasting and the implications, here is an article that explains it pretty well.

Cara45 is my favorite specialty malt in Belgian beers.
