2015 Iowa Brewers Union (IBU) Open

Post by gwcr »

Dropped off my entries yesterday for the IBU Open. I entered my Irish Red (9D) and Cream Ale (6A). Haven't entered anything in a couple years, so excited to get the comments back in a few weeks. Hope to get some good feedback so I can continue to make tweaks to these two house recipes. Judging is March 27-28. Pretty good sized competition, as of yesterday there were 210 entries.

No ribbons this time around. Cream Ale scored a 29 (little disappointed with that as everyone loves this one). Only 11 entries in the Light Hybrid Beer category, and the Cream Ale that took first also took Best of Show, so definitely some good competition in that category. Irish Red scored a 35 in the Scottish and Irish Ale category. Out of 19 entries, 3 of the top 4 were also Irish Reds. First time entering either of these two beers, so hope to get some good feedback to improve them. Can't get the score sheets back fast enough so I can start to tweak!

I almost entered this comp myself but I missed the deadline as I got caught up with other things. Sounds like some good competition in those categories. I hear Irish Red is always a tough category to judge as there is so much variety from one extreme to the other and lots of personal preference and misunderstood guidelines.
