Heady Topper yeast

Post by Banjo-guy »

My brother-in law surprised us during our visit to Vermont by having a case of Heady Topper. I got tired of drinking it and bought a sampler 12 pack of Wolaver. I really like Heady but I don't want to drink it all night. Wolaver is Otter Creeks organic brand. I loved the Outmeal Stout.

My son took home 10 Heady's. I took 4. I have two left and am thinking of harvesting the yeast.
Is this yeast available to buy? I think it is referred to as the Conan strand of yeast.
If I can buy it I won't bother trying to harvest it from the two cans that I have.

You can't buy the exact same yeast HT uses but there are a few strains around. One is ECY29. Gigayeast (a new company) has a yeast they say is the 'Vermont style' and it's their #GY054. I think I just read that the Yeast Bay had a Vermont yeast made for them by White labs but I know nothing about that one.

Don't know if you saw this, but HomeBrew Finds found a heady Topper yeast clone:

That's a new company to me. They have some interesting yeasts. The price is a little lower than Wyeast and White Labs. I haven't checked the shipping charges yet. Thanks for the link.
I might give yeast harvesting a try. I can't get to it for 3-4 weeks.

I was able to get a slurry of the yeast at the local brewery. Not sure where they harvested from. It's worth a check at your local brewery if you have a relationship with them and they are cool with cutting you a jar.

Hmmm... summer is running out...

Omega Yeast - OYL-500 - Saisonstein's Monster ... mix of French and Belgian Saison? I like.

Omega Yeast - OYL-028 - Belgian Ale W - Sounds like 3787/WLP530.

Omega Yeast - OYL-024 - Belgian Ale A - Sounds like Belgian Ardennes.

I might pick up some of each... if shipping doesn't suck.

I love all the new yeast options. If only I could get more here at the LHBS. I suppose I could go up to Rebel (they have added a few of the dry options... Lallemand and Mangrove Jack's), but it's pretty well out of my way. #firstWorldProblems
