Prices

Post by Beer-lord »

Since I'm not buying until I bring my stock down, I can only drool. But, searchinng FarmHouse, Hops Direct and Yakima, for the most part, Farmhouse is cheaper. Hops Direct seems to always be out of the popular hops.
My LHBS isn't cheaper when buying by the pound but their ounce price isn't bad at all and beats most online shops.

I'm seeing lots of interest in Pacific hops.
Where do you buy your hops?

Yakima Valley. They seem to have the best stock and variety IMHO.
Even paying shipping, my LHBS can't match their prices
Also, flat rate shipping.
If it will all fit in the bag it ships for 6.99 no matter how much it costs!

I'm a Farmhouse fanboy. Normally, great prices but stock is usually good. Second place is Yakima. Both of those companies like me. :)

I usually get my hops from Farmhouse - but last fall I preordered Citra, Amarillo and Simcoe from LabelPeelers, and it was a really good deal.

I really really like Farmhouse's prices, including shipping. However, I typically just buy my hops from the LHBS on an as-needed basis for whatever I'm brewing. I don't have to worry about buying more than I need, and I don't usually need very much for 2.5 gallon batches that I brew.

I'm a Farmhouse guy as well ... Used to be other outlets though their pricing and availability on needed hops in bigger amounts have always been great.

These days I often simply add some 2oz bags of hops to my MoreBeer order to get up to "free shipping" price. And then in a pinch run to the LHBS if I really can't find a hop in my freezer that I want to use. I could save some money from Farmhouse if I bought 1# bulk, but it's not a big enough amount to override the "convenience" factor for me. I'm also typically a 2.5 gallon batch brewer. I prefer MoreBeer these days because since they opened the East location, I can get Wyeast smack packs shipped to me in 1 day of transit time - even with free shipping - so with ice they get here still cold even when it's 80 outside. So I'm always just looking for the extra little bit of stuff to add to my order to get to the magic $59 number. No LHBS in my area sells Wyeast, only White Labs, and the selection of that is spotty at best, IE I can get Chimay yeast, but rarely Westmalle, and I prefer Westmalle. So for me, MoreBeer east is a godsend.

Well Beer-Lord most people don't buy hops by the truck load like you do. Are you still getting single axle loads or have you gone to ten wheeler and tri-axle loads? :) I Know you like Hoppy and just playing with you :clink:

I've been to my 72 step program, HBA (Hop Buyer's Anonymous) and have learned to reduce my stock before buying more. All I've gotten in the last 2 months is a pound of Simcoe since I was out and use it often.
It's painful to discuss but I'm getting better.
