Ebay Caps by the Thousand

Post by John Sand »

I just bought 2,000 caps for $32 delivered. There's a homebrew store selling out stock in Ca. I'd bought then before by the gross. A kind member of the old MrB forum sent me a surplus bunch free. Sometimes they come with a kit. But bottling today left me with maybe enough for another batch. So I went online and found them for less than 2c each. I'm lousy with links and such, but go on ebay, they are easy to find.

That's it, thanks. The same seller has packages of 100, 1000, or a full box (10,000 maybe?).

That shipping is quite high, given that USPS Priority is a fixed rate if you fit it in the box, but I guess the total price isn't bad still.

Shipping is high but fortunately they're only about an hour from me so I might just have to go by and see if they have the same prices in store.

I think the carton is for local pick up.
Even with the shipping, I'm paying about 1.6c per cap. Very cheap.

I just bought 2,000 also, now $29.95. I used my 2% back credit card and Fatwallet for another 1% back to cut my cost to $29.05 or 1.453 cents per cap. I most recently paid 3.125 cents per cap, although I always found there were more like 139 instead of 144 in the package, so it was 3.24 cents... This is 55% less. And will last me a few years.

Thanks John for the recommendation.

I am Leary of cheap caps. In my experience they are often made of thinner metal so they don't crimp as well. Caps are not a very big expense so I stick with my nice sturdy ones. The oxygen barrier is just a nice perk on them as well.

These seem fine Gym. They're selling out the stock of a closing HB supply.

Just today I weighed one of the ebay caps against one from a local bottle of craftbrew. The ebay cap is slightly heavier.

Same as when I bought - $29.95 final price. John paid $32.95 as I recall. Either way, a good deal.

FYI, I counted my caps (yes, I'm detail-oriented, and I like to know when my supplies will run out) and they were within 1.65% of 2,000 (1,967). Effective cost of 1.523 cents per cap. My LHBS charges $4.50 now (used to be $3.99), which is 3.125 cents per cap (actually, since they were always light, the real cost was 3.237 cents per cap, so this is 53% less.

For those that say "real dollars matter", I agree. For 1,967 caps, I saved $33.71, or enough to buy the ingredients for an entire 5 gallon extract recipe.

RickBeer....as detail oriented as you are, I can't believe you didn't call them and bitch at them for sending 1,967 caps instead of the advertised 2,000.
