Columbus Brewing Co. Bodhi IIPA Clone
This is on deck for this weekend. I found out that the husband of a girl I work with is a homebrewer. He started like most of us with a MB kit. He is now onto extract recipes and does a lot of clones. IPA's are one of his favorite styles. He asked if he could come to my place to see how an AG recipe is done, so I said sure. I was planning on doing my Red IPA, but then asks "have you ever had the Bodhi from Columbus Brewing? It's right up there with Pliny and Heady." Unfortunately, I've never had it. Long story short....we did some research and came up with a clone. He tells me it's extremely hop forward and after the research and writing the recipe, I can see why. It's made from Pilsner and Vienna....no two row and no crystal malts. Kind of different for an IIPA. I can see why the hops will shine in this, there is no sweet malt to cover them up. Columbus Brewing is a local brewery and this stuff is available on tap only. Here's the ratings from BeerAdvocate: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/341/53187
So he's coming over Sunday and we are going to brew this up. We split the cost on the ingredients so we'll split the finished batch also.

Looks good Chris, you can't go wrong with those hops. Plus you get to have someone there to brew with, double win.

Very interesting looking ipa, I've never brewed with Pilsner malt. Being from Columbus myself I may have to try and brew this one. Keep us posted Chris and let us know this one turns out.

Re: Columbus Brewing Co. Bodhi IIPA Clone
It's all sealed up and getting happy. I came in low again on my gravity, damn it. 1.065 instead of 1.073. I didn't stir the grains during the mash this time. Maybe that did it. It was really windy and a little cool today so I didn't want to lose any heat by taking the lid of the mash tun off. Maybe I shouldn't have worried about it, and stirred it anyway. Oh well, it's a high starting gravity anyway, so a little loss in ABV isn't a big deal. The color was a really pale yellow with a hint of orangeness to it. The flavor was outstanding. And it already had a nice aroma. I have a feeling this is going to be a really tasty IPA in the end.

Today was dry hop day. Took an FG reading and it's at 1.010, right were it should be, so this is coming in at 7.2%. The flavor was a very pronounced citrus, I was getting mostly orange and grapefruit. Very tasty. Dropped the hops in a sealed her back up.

Re: Columbus Brewing Co. Bodhi IIPA Clone
I've read lots by Mitch Steele that he likes his IPA's without all the crystal. I guess that's what I'm doing wrong.
I love Columbus too. Love this one (at least how it reads)

And without the crystal malt the color was a real pale gold. It was hazy, but I'll bet it will clear real nice after the cold crash.

Re: Columbus Brewing Co. Bodhi IIPA Clone
Happy New Year with the first pour....It's a very light golden yellow with just a touch of orangeness to it. It was a little hazy, a little more time in the fridge and this should pour extremely clear. As you can see the head was a nice size. The aroma was very citrusy...both tangerine and grapefruit. The bitterness is really smooth. It's definitely there but its balanced very well with the flavor and aroma, which is also citrusy. This is a pretty good IPA. The pilsner malt and lack of crystal malts really do let the hops shine in this one.
