Re: should I ditch the starter?

yeah, I'm doing a westy 12 clone, so that's why i'm unsure about what to do. Basically the foam stopper was still in there but kind of resting on the lip of the flask sideways with blowoff material everywherel

should I ditch the starter?

I did a 1.8 L starter using the 3787 yeast, and had some serious blowoff issues. When I came home, the foam stopper came almost all the way out and was just resting on the lip of the flask. I'm not sure if I should keep this or throw it out.

shank size for keezer?

I'm going to convert my chest freezer to a keezer and am unsure what size shanks I should get to put into the collar. I believe my freezer is 6.5 CU. I can fit (2) five gallon cornies, and one 2.5 gallon corny keg.

Thanks.

Re: Hops fading after a few days in the keg.

It is possible though I'm not feeling very positive about it, that purging and using good C02 might, with age, clean up a bit. My question would be will it make you sick. It's rare but I'm sure it can happen. I have done 5 kegs with this new co2. Only one of them tasted good, but that's because we ...

Re: Hops fading after a few days in the keg.

Ok, it's definitely the co2. I had another keg going at the same time I was carbonating the other one, and it tastes awful too. Tastes infected. I should note that the beer in keg number one has darkened as well.

Re: Hops fading after a few days in the keg.

I set mine at 12 and leave it alone. Occasionally, I've done 30 for 1 day, 20 for 2 days and 10-12 for the rest when I want to drink it quickly but I rarely have that need. After that, my keg is perfect until it kicks. I've read that some of the paintball places offer refills but it's not suggested...

Re: Hops fading after a few days in the keg.

I know that different levels of CO2 can affect the taste by giving it a bittering effect. I also know that some places don't change the filters or whatever it is they are supposed to in their equipment and that can cause problems. It's easy to find out. Empty the tanks, and go somewhere else and wa...

Re: Hops fading after a few days in the keg.

I'm actually going to blame my co2. I switched where I do exchanges for my co2 to somewhere closer. Never had any problems, doing things the same way for over 2 years of kegging. All of a sudden I switch to a different co2 place and my beer tastes off in a matter of 4-5 days. I cannot see it being a...

Hops fading after a few days in the keg.

Lately, my beers have been killer for the first couple of days, then the hop aroma/flavor tends fade all of a sudden. I can't pinpoint what is going wrong. Could it be the picnic taps I'm using?

Re: Beer smith-Heady Topper BIAB conversion???

Ok, before I was clicking to keep the original gravity, color and bitterness, and I believe that was what throwing things off. Unclicking it seems to increase the SRM a little but everything else seems to be right.

Beer smith-Heady Topper BIAB conversion???

I'm trying to convert a heady topper recipe from BYO, and scaling it up from 5.5 gal (regular all grain to 7 gal biab, but beersmith is giving me very screwy results. Here's the recipe 15 lbs British Pale Ale Malt 6 oz caravienne 1 lb turbinado (10 min) .5 oz Magnum (60 min) 1 oz Simcoe (30) 1 oz Ca...

5.2 stablizer - the myth

Decided to do a BIAB batch today adding the 5.2 stabilizer instead of doing traditional all-grain where I usually add minerals based upon the spreadsheet Bru'n. This was very time consuming, so I put the 5.2 stabilizer along with BIAB brewing to the test. After adding the 5.2 stabilizer, my mash ph ...

Re: missing Corn Sugar mistake in IPA, what to do?

When I have extra wort, I usually change up the yeast in the smaller carboy. I like doing dry yeast in the smaller one, because I am lazy and do different dry hops as well.

Re: missing Corn Sugar mistake in IPA, what to do?

When do you think I should add it? I already added it to the smaller carboy, because the krausen has already settled. The 6 gallon carboy is going crazy, but the overflow has stopped. I'm just afraid of having a really dry beer if I add it later.

missing Corn Sugar mistake in IPA, what to do?

I brewed an Abner clone from BYO- 8 gallons. Plugging in the numbers to beersmith, I was supposed to add 1 lb 6.2 oz of corn sugar for the last the last ten minutes of the boil. I mistakenly only added 6.2 oz, and was going to add the rest by diluting it with some boiled water. The OG for the recipe...
