Re: re use oak cubes?
if they get soaked in bourbon prior to each use though, wouldn't that sanitize them anyway? at least in theory? or alternatively I could store the cubes in bourbon in a mason jar between uses. it would leech out some of the oaky flavors over time but it would increase the bourbon flavors in the wood...

addition to a 90 shilling scotch ale
so I'm thinking of doing NB's 90 shilling strong scotch ale. if I add .5 lb of d180 candi syrup after the first week to it... do you think that would add a nice nuance or make poopy?

Re: 5 gallon mash tun spigot issues
watched a youtube video (how to build the best mash tun from a cooler). his cooler was like mine.. no gasket / odd size hole. he gets past this using 1/2 inch nipple which he Teflon tapes on the valve side. he used a 3/4 inch silicone gasket (flat) that fits over the nipple, a metal washer and a loc...

Re: 5 gallon mash tun spigot issues
i was looking at screwy's design too but he uses a 3/8" nipple. the hole is 7/8" diameter. there is no rubber inner gasket in the cooler that would keep the nipple from sliding around off center and causing leaks. what if i use a 3/4" nipple and valve... 3/4 " is 6/8 leaving just...

5 gallon mash tun spigot issues
i have a 5 gallon orange IGLOO round cooler. i want to put a metal nozzle on it so i unscrewed the plastic spigot. i have 2 issues. 1- hole size: sometime somewhere rubbermaid changed the diameter of the hole for the spigot to 7/8" 2- NO RUBBER INSERT (GASKET). there is a flat washer-like gaske...

Re: Life is Perspective

I think I would like lots of money and take the 'happiness' I could buy with it, however transitory it might be. :P being a cubicle slave that owes my soul to some guy name BILL that I keep getting mail from for over 35 years ...

Re: for anyone who does all grain with water additions
screwybrewer, I did use ezwater calc and the additions were all well within the 'safe' limits. I wasn't shooting for a profile as much as just getting balance. I really didn't add all that much of anything.

Re: for anyone who does all grain with water additions
happened twice now and there are 2 possible culprits: the beer or the glucosamine / chondroitin ive been drinking with my nightly tea. each time with the stout I consumed about half a liter. prior to coming into work the other night I had a very small glass with no ill effect so I am leaning toward ...

Re: for anyone who does all grain with water additions
used an old pack of us04... best by nov 2014.. made it in march. I notice the bottles have more trub on the bottom than usual despite not siphoning up from the bottom of the fermenter.
shrug... probably something I ate or drank before unless I am really sensitive to Epsom salt??

for anyone who does all grain with water additions
was wondering... do you notice that beer made with chemicals added to your water ie Epsom salt or gypsum gives you more gas than extract or non-chemically tweaked beers? been sampling my first try at all grain and noticed a coincidental increase in stomach gas... wondering if there is a connection. ...
