Re: Return of the Comet

Picked another handful. Definitely the hoppiest smelling, and tasting, hops I've grown. Yeah I ate a cone. Chewed it up good. Hops then sweet now my lips burn a little.

This is how it goes. I'll be picking like this through first frost. They never come on all at once. So far, we've had some good rain and humidity this spring and summer. These are the hoppiest smelling hops I've grown.

Cooking With Beer

I imagine you can put beer in just about anything. There's beer can chicken where you shove a can of beer, usually something yellow, up a chicken and bake or smoke it upright. I've found that's more about moisture than beer flavor. Beer floats where you sub in beer for soda or milk. I think a stout ...

Re: Beer Floats

I've had beer floats at Red Robin. Good stuff.

Re: Return of the Comet

Lucky guy! Wish hops grew well down south. You've got higher humidity, but lower overall heat in the summer down there. It sure may not feel like it, though. Mug-gy! It doesn't get as cold down there in the winter. You're short day where I'm intermediate, in onion talk. Don't know how the daylight ...

Re: Return of the Comet

After two weeks, the bulls aren't very bullish. May just let them grow. Trying something else new. Rather than get silly with string, I'm going to fiddle with sticks. Piled up some sticks against the trellises for the bines to grab on. I don't have any jute and don't want to go to a store just for i...

Re: old hops smell like cheese?

I've never smelt it or dealt it, in this case. What kind of cheese?

Re: Return of the Comet

Comma caterpillars got on my cascade real bad one year. Millions. Maybe even dozens. But they didn't show up until the plant was over 5 feet tall. If something is eating them as shoots, it could be snails, slugs, or rodents.

Re: Return of the Comet

Zone 8a here. A late March frost or even April hail storm isn't unheard of, and has tore up my gardens before, but I seriously doubt we'll see another frost. Maybe low 50s.

Re: Return of the Comet

A chocolate stout is what I put them in. An American lager or a wheat is what I should've put them in so I could've tasted them. There was visible lupulin, but they hardly had any scent, and the flavor, I ate one, was plant. That was only year two, though, so hopefully this year is more better.

Return of the Comet

Every 75 years, or 5 months, whichever comes first, the Comet hops return to my garden. Have for now 3 years, anyway. So what I did was when it got cool enough to start killing back the bines, about the first frost, was cut the plants down and cover them with mulch. They stayed covered all winter. T...
